While Bell & Ross is best known for its design language inspired by aviation instruments, the brand also produces a range of dive watches, and Bell & Ross has unveiled the next-generation BR 03 Diver in its latest 2024 release. The recently announced line-up covers five different models, including three stainless steel models, as well as two models with black ceramic cases, and while this latest generation update is largely an evolutionary improvement over the previous generation collection, the new Bell & Ross BR 03 Diver watch benefits from several notable updates that set it apart from its direct predecessor.
At launch, the three stainless steel models of the new Bell & Ross BR 03 Diver collection include the black ref. BR03A-D-BL-ST/SRB, the white ref. BR03A-D-WH-ST/SRB and the blue ref. BR03A-D-BLU-ST/SRB. Apart from the different colors of the individual components, the three new stainless steel BR 03 Diver models are identical in all other respects. Meanwhile, the two versions with black ceramic cases are the ref. BR03A-D-BL-CE/SRB (with a matte black dial) and the “Full Lum” ref. BR03A-D-LM-CE/SRB, the latter representing a new generation of top models with a full luminous dial in a light blue color.
Like its predecessor, the BR 03-92, the new Bell & Ross BR 03 Diver features the brand’s signature “square with a circle” shape, is 42mm wide and water-resistant to 300 meters. In addition, while the new model still features a flat anti-reflective sapphire crystal to protect the dial, a unidirectional chronograph bezel, a solid caseback and a screw-down crown at 3 o’clock, the bezel insert of the new generation BR 03 Diver is now made of ceramic (rather than anodized aluminum), which gives it a more refined overall look and excellent resistance to scratches and corrosion.
The design and layout of the dial of the new Bell & Ross BR 03 Diver is essentially the same as its direct predecessor in the BR 03 Diver collection, with luminous hour markers, an angled chapter ring with a minute track, and a round date window with a color-matched calendar disc at 4:30. Some subtle updates have been made to enhance display legibility, including slightly larger hour markers and an improved font, but the most obvious difference is the updated shape of the hands, which now feature large arrow-shaped tips to further facilitate at-a-glance reading of the time.
As you would expect from a dive watch that complies with the ISO 6425 standard, all hands and hour markers on the new Bell & Ross BR 03 Diver models are luminous. Additionally, while the aluminum bezel insert featured on the previous generation only featured a luminous dot to indicate its zero mark, the ceramic bezel insert on the new BR 03 Divers features a Super-LumiNova coating on all 60-minute chronograph scales, making it easier to track elapsed time in the dark. While four of the five new models exclusively use green-luminescent Super-LumiNova, the ceramic “Full Lum” version features blue-luminescent luminescence across the entire dial surface, while the remaining markers glow green in the dark.
Internally, the new Bell & Ross BR 03 Diver models have also been updated, with the new generation featuring the brand’s Caliber BR-CAL.302-1 automatic movement. Similar to the BR-CAL.302 found in the previous generation BR 03 Diver, the BR-CAL.302-1 is based on the core architecture of the venerable Sellita SW300. With this in mind, the Bell & Ross BR-CAL.302-1 is derived from an updated version of this popular Swiss movement that benefits from an optimized barrel and mainspring design, and while it still runs at a frequency of 28,800vph (4 Hz), the BR-CAL.302-1 offers an extended power reserve of 54 hours, compared to the 42 hours of autonomy offered by the previous generation.
Similar to previous collections, the new Bell & Ross BR 03 Diver models are also available in sets, including a two-piece rubber strap and a nylon Velcro-style strap, but these straps have been redesigned to better accommodate a variety of wrist sizes. Although the lug width of the BR 03 Diver is 24 mm, the sides of the strap extend to meet the outer edge of the lug, which creates a cuff-like feeling and makes the overall appearance visually larger. In addition, black seems to be the only available color for the Velcro strap, and although four of the five new models are equipped with a black rubber strap, the blue dial stainless steel model is paired with a dark blue rubber strap to match its dial and bezel insert.
